Pioneer Spirit is a beautiful expression of Antique Rose Emporium’s commitment to breeding strong, garden-worthy roses. Developed from the breeding program initiated by Dr. Robert Basye at Texas A&M University, this rose reflects his vision of creating healthier, more resilient garden roses without sacrificing classic beauty.

Often compared in form to the beloved Sombreuil, Pioneer Spirit carries that same old-fashioned elegance, but in a soft-medium pink. Very full, old-style blooms (41+ petals) appear in small clusters along long, arching canes, creating a romantic, cottage-garden effect. Flowers measure about 3¼ inches across and bloom in generous flushes throughout the season. Fragrance is mild, though many gardeners note a light sweetness on warm days.

This tall, upright Large-Flowered Climber produces 6–8 foot canes clothed in large, semi-glossy dark green foliage. Hardy and reliable in USDA Zone 5b and warmer, Pioneer Spirit is a “mannerly” climber; vigorous enough to make a statement on a pillar, trellis, or fence, yet refined enough for smaller spaces.

For best performance, remove spent blooms to encourage repeat flowering. Prune lightly during the first two years while establishing, then reduce by about one-third annually and remove unproductive wood every few years.

We do ask that you make sure the weather in your zone is suitable for receiving and plating your roses.

Antique Rose Emporium is in Texas and the December weather can be anywhere from below freezing to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. But our weather is extremely mild compared to the northern United States.

We want you to have the best success possible with your roses and ask that you let us care for them over the winter and receive them at the time that you plan to plant.

Please ensure that you are not experiencing freezing temperatures and the ground is not frozen when you plan to receive your rose.
