Rose Anatomy: Understanding the Parts of a Rose

If you're new to roses, it may seem overwhelming to hear gardeners teaching rose care when you might not even know all of the terms they are using. Before we talk about growing and caring for roses, it helps to understand the plant itself. Knowing the basic anatomy of a rose can make gardening instructions much easier to understand.

When someone tells you to prune back to a leaf node, protect the crown, or remove a cane, now you'll know exactly what they're talking about.

 

Roots

A rose's roots anchor the plant in the soil while absorbing water and nutrients needed for growth. Roots also serve as an important storage system for the plant, storing resources that can be used to support new growth.

A healthy, well-established root system is particularly valuable when roses are dealing with environmental stress such as drought, extreme heat, or freezing temperatures. Root health is influenced by factors such as soil conditions, drainage, watering practices, and the overall health of the plant.

At Antique Rose Emporium, our roses are grown on their own roots, rather than being grafted onto a different rootstock. The above photo shows how rose roots can appear in our 2-gallon pots, compared to industry-standard container sizes.

Our larger containers allow us to grow our roses for a longer duration in the pot, averaging approximately 9–18 months for most varieties, and sometimes nearly two years for certain varieties. This gives the plants additional time to develop an established root system before they make the transition into their new gardens.

When planting a container-grown rose, it is important to remember that a healthy root system needs both water and oxygen. Good drainage is therefore just as important as adequate moisture. Constantly saturated soil can deprive roots of oxygen and create conditions that contribute to root problems (such as root rot).

Crown

The crown is the area where a rose's roots transition into its above-ground growth. It is an important central part of the plant because it connects the root system with the canes and shoots growing above the soil.

The crown can be particularly important during winter in climates with severe freezes. Extreme cold can damage this central growing area, which is one reason gardeners in colder regions may use mulch, frost cloth, or other protective measures around the base of their roses during periods of severe winter weather. Mulching around the base of a rose can also help insulate the root zone and retain soil moisture. However, gardeners should avoid keeping consistently wet mulch or soil packed directly against the canes. Prolonged moisture around the base of the plant can contribute to rot and other problems.

Canes

The woody stems of a rose are called canes. Depending on the rose's class and growth habit, canes may be upright, arching, sprawling, or climbing. Some roses produce relatively rigid canes, while others have long, flexible canes that can be trained onto structures.

As canes mature, they generally become thicker and more woody. The age and condition of a cane can be useful when making pruning decisions. Gardeners commonly remove canes that are dead, damaged, diseased, weak, or poorly positioned, while retaining healthy growth that contributes to the plant's overall structure.

Rose canes can also vary considerably in their appearance. Some varieties have smooth or nearly thornless canes, while others are covered with numerous thorns of varying sizes and shapes.

Our example photo of the stunning Basye's Purple Rose showcases just how thorny some rose varieties can be along their canes. Many gardeners will seek out terms such as "Very Thorny" or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, "Nearly Thornless" when choosing roses that best suit their garden and preferences.

Shoots

A shoot is new growth emerging from a rose. New shoots often begin as tender, flexible growth and gradually mature, hardening into woody canes.

Fresh shoots can be especially vulnerable to sudden temperature changes, including early or late freezes. This is one reason gardeners in areas prone to late spring frosts need to be thoughtful about the timing of major pruning and fertilizing, which can encourage a flush of tender new growth. We avoid doing both of these maintenance tasks during the fall within 6 weeks of your first expected frost to reduce the risk of damage to new growth.

New rose growth can appear in a surprising range of colors. Depending on the variety and environmental conditions, young shoots and leaves may appear light green, bronze, red, pink, burgundy, or even purple before gradually changing color as they mature.

Our Star of the Republic rose, photographed during peak fall cool weather here in Central Texas, shows this beautifully with a bold red new shoot compared to the older green foliage it eventually develops.

These colorful shades are often completely normal and can be a sign of healthy new growth. New gardeners sometimes see unusually red or distorted growth and immediately worry about Rose Rosette Disease, but healthy new growth can naturally display striking colors depending on the variety and conditions. Color alone should never be used to diagnose or rule out a plant disease

Leaves

Rose leaves are compound leaves, meaning that each leaf is made up of several smaller sections called leaflets attached to a central leaf stalk (petiole). Healthy foliage is essential for photosynthesis.

The edges of rose leaves are called the leaf margin. Leaf margins can vary among roses and can sometimes be useful when identifying or distinguishing varieties. Depending on the species or variety, margins may appear relatively smooth, finely toothed, or deeply serrated.

Leaflets

The individual sections that make up a rose's compound leaf are called leaflets, and you may notice that some rose descriptions might refer to the number, size, shape, texture, or color of leaflets when describing a particular variety. These characteristics can be useful when comparing roses or attempting to identify an unknown plant.

Many modern rose varieties commonly have 3–5 leaflets, particularly on leaves near the flower, but rose foliage can vary considerably. Depending on the species, variety, and position of the leaf on the plant, roses may have leaves composed of 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, or even 13 leaflets.

The number of leaflets alone is not enough to positively identify a rose, but it can be one helpful characteristic when considered alongside other features such as flower form, fragrance, growth habit, foliage, thorns, and bloom color.

Leaf Node

A leaf node is the point on a cane where a leaf attaches and where a dormant bud* or new shoot can develop.

Nodes are particularly important when pruning roses because new growth can emerge from buds located at these points. When making a pruning cut, gardeners often cut just above a healthy, outward-facing bud or leaf node.

Choosing an outward-facing bud can help encourage new growth to develop away from the center of the plant, which can contribute to a more open structure and better air circulation.

*The word "bud" is commonly used for where new growth emerges at the leaf node, usually under the stipule, which connects the petiole to the cane. This use of "bud" is not to be confused with the rose's flower buds, which are discussed below. The technical term for this is the "axillary bud". 

Flower Buds

A rose bud is an undeveloped flower that has not yet opened. Buds develop through a series of stages as the flower forms, eventually opening to reveal the petals and other floral structures inside.

The speed at which a bud develops can be influenced by many factors, including temperature, sunlight, moisture, nutrition, weather, and the individual rose variety. Some roses may progress from a tightly closed bud to an open flower quickly in warm weather, while cooler conditions can slow the process. It's also important to note that not every bud will necessarily develop into a perfect open flower. Weather conditions, insects, disease, physical damage, and other environmental factors can affect bud development.

Once a bud opens, the flower's appearance can also change considerably over its lifespan as petals unfurl, colors shift, and the bloom eventually begins to fade.

Petals

The colorful portions of the rose flower that most people immediately recognize are the petals. Petal count, shape, color, texture, size, and arrangement can vary dramatically between rose varieties.

These characteristics contribute significantly to a rose's flower form, which is one of the features gardeners and rose breeders use when describing and distinguishing varieties.

Petals can be arranged in many different ways, from simple flowers with relatively few petals to extremely full blooms containing numerous overlapping petals. Their colors may also change as a flower matures, making the same rose appear different from bud stage through full bloom and eventual fading.

Petal texture and arrangement can even influence how a rose responds to weather. Roses with very full, tightly packed flowers may be more susceptible to balling in cool, wet conditions because moisture can become trapped between the petals.

What Are Rose Hips & Why Do They Matter?

Did you know that, much like their cousins within the Rosaceae family, the apple, pear, peach, plum, strawberry, and more, roses can also produce fruit? Well, that is exactly what rose hips are- the fruit of the rose! They develop after a flower has been pollinated and the petals fade, with the reproductive parts of the flower maturing into the hip. They can vary tremendously in size, shape, and color depending on the variety of rose; from tiny, round hips to elongated or pear-shaped ones, and from orange and red to deep reddish-purple. There are also some nice gardening benefits to mention:

  • They’re part of the rose’s natural reproductive cycle. If you allow hips to develop, you’re letting the rose complete that cycle rather than continually removing spent flowers.
  • They can provide fall and winter interest. A rose covered in colorful hips can be surprisingly beautiful after flowering has finished.
  • They can provide food for wildlife. Birds and other wildlife may make use of rose hips, particularly as other food sources become less abundant.
  • They contain vitamin C and other nutrients. Rose hips have historically been used for culinary and herbal purposes, including teas, syrups, jellies, and preserves. That said, the seeds and fine hairs inside the hip should not be consumed and can be irritating, so careful preparation matters.
  • They can be useful for rose breeding. If you're interested in hybridizing roses, the hip contains the seeds that can potentially produce new rose seedlings.

Please note: not all roses produce hips. Check the description for each rose to see whether or not that particular variety produces hips. Find roses with hips here.

Whether you should leave rose hips on your plant depends on what you want from your rose. If your goal is to encourage a repeat-blooming rose to produce as many flowers as possible, removing spent blooms before hips develop can help redirect the plant’s energy toward producing more flowers. On the other hand, leaving hips to mature can provide food for wildlife, add seasonal interest, and allow you to enjoy another fascinating part of the rose’s natural life cycle.
