Thor
Large Flowering Cl.
1940
‘Thor’ was the product of extensive breeding in disease resistancy and cold hardiness. It was extremely popular in the North when introduced, but due to the remontancy of modern climbers, this rose fell from favor. That is rather unfortunate, as ‘Thor’ is a gorgeous rose when in bloom. Globular buds open to a deep red, 4 inch bloom containing a damask scent. When unfurling, the well-formed flowers look like Hybrid Teas, yet once open, the petals reflex to a cabbage rose appearance. Another nice characteristic of the maturing bloom is that its color intensifies rather than fades.
